Outage Alert

We experienced an outage on Sunday, November 19 to Monday, November 20.

Here’s some more info:

“social . ridetrans . it uses a virtual machine, like many Mastodon instances, hosted by a company that leases out slices of its physical hardware to smaller entities. The previous outage, on the 8th, was reportedly caused by a partial power failure in the data center that holds that physical hardware during maintenance the hosting company was doing. That's unusual but sometimes happens.

Today's outage, on the 20th, does not yet have a determined cause. The hosting company gave us notice of planned maintenance on the night of the 19th. However, the outage lasted several hours longer than they planned. We've also not heard from them since the outage notification. Because of this, we have purchased a new virtual machine from a larger hosting company with redundant hardware.

We will be changing over to that new host over Thanksgiving, when traffic should be lower.

Most user data, like pictures and videos, is kept separate with another company that specializes in reliable bulk data storage. We back up text-based user content every night. While we don't guarantee your data will never go poof, we take steps to keep it safe!”
